Possible Gender Combinations tn the Succession Process in Family Businesses: A Comparative Study in the Brazilian Context

This article aims to analyze the possible gender combinations in succession process in family enterprises of Uberlândia and Monte Carmelo cities, located in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This research was developed at the exploratory level and it used a qualitative methodological approach, through a comparative study of twelve cases. The data were collected through in-depth structured interviews and they were analyzed by the content analysis method and the categorical analysis technique, which categories were defined a posteriori (succession preparation, succession process and post-succession). The results show lack of planning in the succession preparation, conflicts between siblings who stayed apart from the process and changes in management after the successor’s parent exit. The gender combinations are highlighted, specially in the successes, where the female performance is evidenced.
