Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to verify the appropriateness of Mintzberg's (1973) roles approach to understanding the work of the executive in describing the work of the small business manager.
Method: A structured observation was used like a method of data collection. All the cases analyzed in this study replicated the original study of Mintzberg (1973), allowing, therefore, comparisons and analyzes, with support of the descriptive statistics. In order to achieve the objectives, seven small business owner from brazilian companies were compared with the international studies.
Originality / Relevance: In large companies there is a vast and long tradition of research on the work of the executive, however, in small companies this type of study is still scarce. To know the nature of the work of the leader in small business is relevant because it allows self-reflection on his work routine in order to improve their performance and may also assist development organizations and educational entities in teaching activities specific to the reality of small business.
Results: It was concluded that the work of small business manager can be described by the roles approach and specifically by the roles: operator; specialist; decision and information. The small business owner manager, however, does not recognize himself playing the interpersonal roles.
