This article aims to understand the innovation skills in micro and small enterprises. A multiple case study was accomplished in six micro and small companies in São Paulo. The sources of evidence used were document analysis and semi-structured interviews with the managers responsible for the innovation actions in the organizations and the founder of the company, president or main partner. The interviews were recorded and the data analyzed using Atlas.Ti. The results showed that micro and small companies have a high potential for innovation and that innovation is an essential factor in achieving competitiveness. The innovation skills (leadership and strategy, innovative internal environment, people, innovation processes and results of the innovations) have been expressive to understand the innovation in these companies. However, these companies find it difficult to plan innovation activities, to obtain the necessary resources for innovation and to transform innovation factors into innovation results.Downloads
